Every two years, Ports Australia hosts the Biennial Conference. It is Australia’s premier maritime event, bringing together leaders from ports, maritime services, business, and political spectrum. Here are some of the largest ports in Australia.

The suburb of Port Adelaide is located about 14km north-west of the city of Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia. According to the Ship Technology, in May 1837, it officially became the port of Adelaide. As the largest and most significant port in southern Australia, the port of Adelaide accounts for the majority of port activity in the region. It handles over 100 million tons of cargo in a year, as well as tourism cruises.

It is located at the mouth of the Brisbane River, approximately 15 miles from the Brisbane Central Business District, Queensland. According to the Ship Technology, as of 2010-11, the port was Australia’s third busiest port, with 33 million tons of cargo carried. It is currently the fastest growing container port with 978,814 TEUs traded in 2010-11. In the mid-1800s, the port became a major commercial center. The Brisbane seaport handles over 2600 ships and transports more than 28 million tons of cargo each year.
Known for its strict environmental regulations, Brisbane is committed to ecological balance. Despite this, there is a problem with sludge buildup, which limits transportation and is costly to remove.

The port of Hedland was founded in 1863, it was named after Peter Hedland, the first European to reach the harbour (1857). As well as being the biggest container port in all of Australia, Port of Hedland also boasts the largest container port in all of Oceania. Hedland, situated on the Western coast of Australia, became the first port to handle over a million tons of cargo within a year. Currently, the Port of Hedland handles about 452 million tons of cargo each year. This port is linked to several other ports in Oceania, ranking it as a Maritime Security Level 1 port. Aside from their advanced infrastructure, they are also known for tracking and forecasting cyclones.

The Port of Sydney is located on Botany Bay, and it’s the second biggest container port in the country. It was originally situated in Sydney Harbor in the 1960s. The frequency and volume of cargo increased over time, leading to the development of multiple ports, including Botany in 1971. There are over 1200 commercial vessels in Sydney Harbour each year, including cruise ships that dock at Sydney’s two cruise terminals, as well as thousands of recreational, passenger, and working vessels.

When John Pascoe Fawkner founded it when he arrived on the Enterprise in 1835. In 2003, it became Australia’s first port to handle up to 2 million TEUs per year. Melbourne now handles over 2.6 million TEUs and approximately 3,000 ships per year.

Port of Wellington is located in Wellington, CentrePort is New Zealand’s most strategically situated intermodal hub, linking road, rail, domestic and international shipping services. The Port of Wellington is the only significant port in Oceania that is located outside of Australia but is nevertheless considered to be part of the country’s port network. The Port of Wellington handles domestic and international shipping linked to railroad and transportation with a yearly cargo of 15 million tons.

Port of Newcastle is a significant Australian seaport located in New South Wales. Having annual trade of around $26 billion to the global economy, the Port of Newcastle enables Australian enterprises to compete successfully in worldwide markets. Currently, the port handles 4,400 ship movements and 164 million tons of cargo per year. This seaport, in particular, has the potential to significantly contribute to the local economy in the form of $1.8 billion in gross state product and it provides around 4700 employment opportunities. Throughout the year, the Port of Newcastle handles a high number of marine voyages.
